Commercial Loss Assessor

What a Commercial Loss Assessor Does, and Why Your Business Needs One

When your premises are damaged, the insurer will appoint a loss adjuster to assess the claim on its behalf. A commercial loss assessor acts for you, the policyholder, preparing, presenting and negotiating your claim so it can be properly assessed under the terms of your policy.

The Difference That Decides Your Settlement

The two titles sound alike, here is the difference: A loss adjuster is appointed by the insurer to assess the claim on the insurer’s behalf. They are professionals carrying out a legitimate role, but their responsibility is to the insurer.

A commercial loss assessor is appointed by you, the policyholder. The role is to prepare, present and negotiate the claim from your side, so the loss is properly evidenced, presented and assessed under the terms of your policy.

  • Acts only for you regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland
  • Reads your policy identifies every section of cover that applies
  • Builds the evidence a detailed, costed schedule of loss
  • Negotiates direct with the insurer’s loss adjuster

How Commercial Claims Differ From Domestic Claims

Commercial claims are more complex because the damage rarely stops at the building. Stock, equipment, fit-out, business interruption and specialist evidence can all form part of the same claim. Each element needs to be assessed, documented and presented clearly under the terms of the policy.

  • Building & fit-out reinstatement works, tenant improvements, specialist finishes and policy-relevant compliance requirements
  • Contents, stock & equipment stock, machinery, plant, equipment, fixtures and business contents reviewed with supporting evidence
  • Business interruption loss of income, increased cost of working, payroll and fixed costs assessed in line with the policy wording
  • Specialist reports & evidence surveying, engineering, drying, forensic or valuation input coordinated where required to support the claim

For fire, smoke and consequential damage, see our commercial fire damage claim guide. If your claim involves loss of income, read our dedicated guide to the business interruption insurance claim process.

Structural assessment of major damage at a commercial building

Where Commercial Settlements Are Lost

The loss of income while you recover is the most under-recovered part of most commercial policies, and it needs a forensic, evidenced approach. Larger losses also require specialist accounting and engineering reports, which we coordinate so the claim holds up under scrutiny.

Property damage can also spread costs across the building, stock, equipment, fit-out and trading losses. We assess the visible and less obvious damage, coordinate specialist input where required, and present the evidence needed to support the claim.

★★★★★

After a fire closed our premises I had no idea where to start. Having someone read the policy, build the claim and argue it with the adjuster took the whole thing off my shoulders. The final settlement was well above the insurer’s first figure.

The insurer’s loss adjuster was friendly but clearly working for them. Bringing in our own loss assessor changed the conversation completely; they captured the loss of trade I would have missed entirely and dealt with everything for us.

Photograph the damage where possible, keep damaged items where safe to do so, and retain receipts and records. Call Commercial Insurance Claim Solutions for a free initial consultation, and we can notify your insurer on your behalf.

It varies with the complexity of the loss; a straightforward claim moves faster than one involving major reinstatement or business interruption. We keep the claim moving, chase the insurer and pursue interim payments where possible so you are not left waiting for cash flow. We cannot guarantee a timeframe, but we manage the process tightly to avoid delay.
